June 2008 — "We toured the Pincher Creek Hutterite Colony when we had some visitors from the UK. There are loads of colonies in southern Alberta but the Pincher Creek colony openly advertises tours, both informal $5/person visits or large, organized ones for coachloads. Our guide was super friendly, informative and welcoming and gave us a two-hour tour of much of the colony - the houses, the kitchen and communal dining areas, the church and school, the egg house, the dairy milking parlour, the cattle facilities, etc... I'd recommend the tour to anyone but it was of particular interest to our English guests as they have nothing of the kind in the UK. And it was easy to organize, we just rang up and had a tour booked for the next afternoon. "

A working Protestant settlement, the Pincher Creek Hutterite Colony has been working the land west of Pincher Creek since 1926. The community has since split twice, founding daughter colonies in Montana and Washington, and today has a population of about 100 people. They farm sheep, cattle, hogs and poultry, run a dairy-processing plant and cultivate enormous gardens to feed their families, and are eager to share the details of their life on the prairies.
