September 2006 — "These springs are part secret, part known to the world. Located just a few miles north of Gardiner is the 45th parallel sign and a parking area along the road (the pools themselves are not sign-posted). A short hike from this car park along the well-used trail leads to the lovely pools and if you're lucky and are not visiting during peak season, you may have them to yourselves. The great thing about the pools is that park officials monitor the area and provide some upkeep - the path to the pool and a few bridges over the scalding water remind you you're not in the back country - but the hot springs have not been turned into a commercial area and are mostly natural, being created by using the natural features of the riverbank and some man-made stone walls (no cement, only rocks) that serve to mix the hot and waters together. Locals go all year round, even in winter, but at any time of year it is pretty cool to stand with one foot in plus 100-degree thermal water and the other in the frigid mountain waters of the Gardiner River, and the trick to enjoying the pools is finding the area with the right mix! "

The Boiling River Hot Springs lie just inside Yellowstone National Park between Gardiner and the park village of Mammoth Hot Springs. Formed by the scorching, underground Boiling River flowing into the cold waters of the Gardiner River, the heated pools are popular with locals and tourists alike and, although the pools are unadvertised, they can be visited by hundreds of tourists a day in peak season.
