June 2008 — "This is a really neat attraction about 15km - 20km west of Victoria. In addition to the lighthouse, Fort Rodd is an artillery fortress that offers a glimpse into Victoria's military past. The grounds are spread out, so plan on doing some walking."

BulletDescription

With the honourable distinction of being the first lighthouse on the west coast of Canada, Fisgard Lighthouse has been a beacon of light symbolizing sovereignty since its construction in 1860. Located 14 km (8.6 mi) from downtown Victoria, BC, the lighthouse still continues to guide mariners to Royal Roads anchorage, Esquimalt naval base and the Victoria harbour. Those wanting to visit Fisgard Lighthouse may do so by going through the large grounds of the historic Fort Rodd Hill. This is a coast artillery fort that was built in the late 1890s and overlooks the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour.

On the walk to the lighthouse visitors will have the opportunity to view some of the wildlife that make their home in the area, such as grey squirrels, Columbian Black-tailed deer, raccoons and several varieties of birds. The surrounding waters are home to harbour seals and once in awhile a sea lion can be spotted. Visitors may also view exhibits, artifacts and display panels in the former keeper's house. Both Fisgard Lighthouse and Fort Rodd Hill can be accessed off Highway 1.
