The beginnings of the port came with the building of the Harford Wharf in 1873. Later development expanded trade and transportation at the port until the Great Depression when local commerce and the port fell into disrepair. In 1954, the citizens of San Luis Obispo County voted to breathe new life into the port and to develop a Harbor District. Today, this buzzing port is home to popular eateries, live fish markets, water sports rentals, fishing and whale-watching tours, private moorings and a boatyard.
