Spiro Mounds, located 7 mi (11 km) outside of Spiro in eastern Oklahoma, is one one of the most significant Native American archeological sites in the country and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site marks a permanent settlement of the Spiro people between 850 and 1450 A.D. and includes 12 large mounds. The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center preserves 150 acres of the site along the Arkansas River and is open to the public. Features include exhibits, interpretive and nature trails, a slide program and small gift shop.
