July 2008 — "We rode our bikes from a campsite in Drumheller. It was a 2 hour ride due to the stopping to see the sights we saw along the way as well as I am sure the age of my kids made the ride a little longer than if they were older. My kids were 5, 7, 8 and 13. We all had smiles on our faces when we saw the massive dinosaurs outside the museum. The best part was seeing the emormous dinosaurs inside the museum and knowing they walked the same trails we just rode our bikes on. The kids were thrilled by that fact. There were plenty of oportunities for interaction with fossils. I most enjoyed the part were we got to "SIT" and watch an actual archeological dig on video. It was all an incredible experience and we are planning to do it again. "

"Fascinating Trip Back in Time"

March 2008 — "I'm not particularly into dinosaurs, but felt a trip to the Royal Tyrrell Museum was a must-do considering its reputation, and I love Drumheller on a sunny day - it's like visiting another planet! The museum is really impressive. They have so many awe-inspiring dinosaur skeletons on display and visitors even get a peek into the painstakingly patient world of fossil collection and restoration. While we were there a guy was carefully chipping away at an ancient turtle fossil encased in rock and was happy to answer curious questions. You can peer into a workroom through large glass windows where ancient dinosaur bones are strewn about on benches, surrounded by interesting tools. The displays are very well set-up and walking through this expansive museum takes you on a chronological journey 40 million years back in time. Fascinating!"

"Great day trip"

October 2007 — "Just like the last reviewer, the last time I was here was a while ago... for a field trip in elementary school. I didn't really know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised!! This museum has been renovated and updated and I thought it looked great. Very fascinating, the museum has impressive dinosaur displays, including a huge T-Rex, and actual dinosaur skulls and bones. I especially liked the underwater gallery, which had a glass floor giving the person the impression that they were really underwater, with ancient sea creatures displayed above and around. I think that the Tyrrell is definitely worth the drive from Calgary, especially if you have friends or family visiting from out of town. And both children and adults will find it equally fascinating!"

"No dusty dinos here"

July 2006 — "The last time I was at this museum I was about six years old and I was a bit apprehensive about going back..would it be worth the drive to go see a bunch of dusty dinosaur skeletons? It absolutely was! Having obviously been busy in the past few years, this museum surprised me. The new interactive displays, located in the front section of the museum, are awesome...I had a hard time tearing myself away from the tetris-like one. One section has fossils mounted behind glass and frames to create a more "gallery-like" feel. It is really a great place to go visit and the surrounding scenery is fantastic. "

Description

Named after Joseph Burr Tyrrell who discovered the first dinosaur fossils in the Drumheller Valley, the Royal Tyrrell Museum contains a wealth of information on Alberta's rich fossil heritage. This internationally recognized palaeontology museum features a large display of complete dinosaur skeletons and a number of interactive exhibits including a Cretaceous garden. Museum amenities include a cafeteria, a picnic area, a gift shop and nearby Badland trails.
