August 2008 — "This park is STUNNING. Like a lot of places in the Canadian Rockies, it features impressive mountains, beautiful lakes and fascinating wildlife, but the thing that really makes it stand out is that it doesn't have that "packaged up for the tourists" feel. The town of Waterton sits on the shore of a huge lake and feels like it's there for the locals. Of course the tourists are there, but the shops and services do not specifically play to them. It's a charming and relaxed little township in one of the most stunning settings I have seen. The town campsite is even pretty (well, the walk-in tent section is--although the busy RV section is nothing special) with a gorgeous beach at one end, quite a few trees, hundreds of cute Columbian Ground Squirrels and free-roaming deer. Must-do's in Waterton Lakes National Park: 1. The Crypt Lake Trail. You have to catch a boat across to the other side of the lake to get to the trail head of this moderate 5 to 6-hr trail up a mountain to a spectacular lake. It is such a fun trail featuring diverse scenery and obstacles, including a long, narrow natural tunnel through the mountain rock! 2. Take a drive to Red Rock Canyon. This area has the park's most concentrated population of bears--we saw four!! :) 3. Kayak to Montana across Cameron Lake. A resident moose often stops by here to play in the water by the rental boats! There is so much more to do here, that I will definitely be back to this little paradise in the Rockies."

July 2008 — "Waterton is my favourite of Canada's national parks. Perhaps it is the park's relatively small size or it's 'end of the road' location that give it a real national park atmosphere, not just an area with passing traffic or coach load upon coach load of tourists. And the scenery is spectacular! Waterton township not only enjoys its stunning location by the lake but is quite charming as well - everyone is there to see the park in one way or another so the shops, restaurants, etc are pretty low key. So...if you want to hike, bike or kayak amongst some of Canada's top scenery but without all the hype, grab your gear and make for this gem of a national park! You'll not be sorry. "

Established in 1895, the park joined with Montana’s Glacier National Park in 1931 to form the first International Peace Park. Knapweed Rodeo
TBA
Waterton visitors expecting barrel racing and bucking broncos at this annual event might be a bit disappointed. The Knapweed Rodeo takes place every July over two days and is not a rodeo but an annual event sponsored by Waterton Lakes National Park in which the public helps pick and bag the area's pesky knapweed. Volunteers get free entry into the park and the event features prizes. Families welcome, no experience necessary.
