Annual Downtown Dance Festival
TBA
The Downtown Dance Festival (DDF) is one of lower Manhattan’s most highly anticipated summer events. Initiated in 1982 by Battery Dance Company (BDC), the Festival has thrilled audiences in the hundreds of thousands and showcased great dance companies from around the world as well as the best New York City has to offer, all free-of-charge to the public. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker and many foreign media outlets have accorded the DDF consistently excellent reviews and lavish features. As Battery Dance Company’s signature downtown community program, DDF has featured over 200 dance companies ranging in style from classical ballet to post-modern, Indian classical to Afro-Cuban. The Downtown Dance Festival is NYC’s longest-running dance festival.

A leading dance company in lower Manhattan and one of America’s most active cultural diplomats with programs in 57 countries, Battery Dance forwards its mission of connecting cultures and peoples through the Downtown Dance Festival. The DDF takes place annually in lower Manhattan’s outdoor plazas and parks, attracting local residents and tourists from all over the world and reinforcing the borough of Manhattan’s position at the epicenter of New York City’s arts life.

In 2013, BDC will expand the festival to new locations in the Financial District, attracting a diverse audience composed of office workers, passersby, tourists and dance aficionados who come to watch the show during the lunchtime breaks. The weekend performances, on the other hand, target lower Manhattan's growing residential population, city-wide residents, and visitors.

BDC continuously seeks fresh and unconventional ideas, and the DDF’s 32nd season will not be an exception. BDC will partner with the National Museum of American Indian to curate a performance by a premier Native American dance company; will collaborate with the Indo-American Arts Council to present a day of Indian classical dance to coincide with India’s Independence Day (August 15) and will cooperate with European Consulates General to present companies from Spain, France and the U.K.
