March 2009 — "Having just moved to Victoria, I had the opportunity to visit Undersea Gardens as part of Be a Tourist in your Own Town this weekend. Undersea Gardens had a large line up of people waiting to get in. I guess this contributed to my high expectations -- not that they were that high really. Undersea Gardens is one of those classic attractions here that has become a must-see, particularly if you have children. But after visiting it, I wouldn't recommend it. You enter a boat that is stationed in the water and then go downstairs to a viewing area. Fish, starfish, sea anemones, and seaweed are held in tanks that surround the boat underwater. But the water was very murky, which is perhaps just what ocean water is like. It was also windy that day, so maybe that churns up the sediment to make it murkier -- I don't know. There was mostly rockfish and some other odd looking sea life to see. And then there was a pond that had starfish in it that people were allowed to touch. The highlight was the sea theatre. Here, the crowd was ushered into a small theatre in front of a large aquarium that housed rockfish, starfish, crabs and big squid. A diver comes in and shows off various fish to some commentary. I felt sorry for the squid. I can't imagine it likes to be manhandled every half hour. The attraction just seemed a bit old and tired and in need of some refurbishing. I don't think it is worth the money. But the chidren that were there seemed to be enjoying it, so it may be worthwhile for them. "
